I can’t believe we are just 12 days away from Ramadan. Which means I have 12 days to get my act together. Kian (turning 5 soon) and Zayn (3.5) love holidays, so Ramadan/ Eid is my Super Bowl. I just finished reading “A New Earth” by Eckhart Tolle. There is so much wisdom but one sentiment in particular spoke to me: your life’s purpose will change with every new stage in your life. The key is to not hold on to your past purpose or stress about the future, but really understand what brings you joy in the present. I see that new stage coming in the horizon, I fear it like a tsunami, but hope it washes over me like sunshine. My usual method of handling change. What I know about my present: I want to surround myself with people that radiate positive energy, I want to fill my time with work that brings me to a place of hyper focus (hyper presence), and I don’t want to miss these fleeting priceless moments with Kian and Zayn. In the last 10 years I've gone from a 26 yo broke nonprofit worker to a 36 yo working mom. March 8 is International Woman's Day and this year's theme is #BalanceForBetter. I’m striking “the balance pose” in support of gender equality. Another thing that’s evolved in the last 10 years is my definition of activism. Everything is activism. What you buy is activism. Not staying silent when witnessing intolerance is activism. Changing your mind is activism. Everyone can be an activist (marching is not required). . . If you want to celebrate IWD, here are a few ways: 1️⃣ Ask a woman to run for office: https://www.sheshouldrun.org/ask 2️⃣ Support a culture that respects dads who want to be primary caregivers. Gloria Steinem said, “The deepest change begins with men raising children as much as women do and women being equal actors in the world outside the home.” My dad was a SAHF and he was pretty great. 3️⃣ Shop like an activist. Wear brands that are fair to the women who make them. It’s important to me that my kids learn an alternative history. As a child I learned quickly that our history books had gaps. So last year, for Black History Month, I started to introduce them to Black Muslim leaders via hand drawn coloring pages. This year I added Mahershala Ali (because I am loving this season of True Detective). As I shared the activity with my kids, I saw my oldest Kian finally start to get it. I sat at my kitchen table telling him about the people on the pages: Mahershala Ali, SZA, Kareem Abdul Jabar, and Malcolm X. He asked me, “They are Muslim? And I’m Muslim?” I saw something flicker behind his eyes. Maybe recognition, maybe pride. But in that moment, I felt “representation matters” with all my being. I didn’t grow up seeing people who looked like me or believed like me in prominent positions, but thanks to those folks and more like them such as Black Muslim Congresswoman @ilhanmn , my kids are growing up in a different world.
